Myrtle Beach and the Grand Strand has long been known as a major seafood capital. The Grand Strand is overflowing with places to grab a fried seafood platter. Vacationers flock to the tropical style “beach bar” seafood restaurants with live entertainment and ocean views. They grab the family and pig-out on fried seafood at one of the 100 or 200-item fried seafood buffets or dress up a bit for one of the many Grand Strand sit down dining seafood houses. And while many Myrtle Beach homeowners love this local staple, residents can be hard pressed to find healthier options in the area.

One of the only establishments in Myrtle Beach offering really fresh, healthy choices on its menu is Kindbelly. It is a welcome change from the chains and processed food options in the area. The eatery’s mission is to feed the community like they feed their family: nourishing, wholesome and clean foods. Kindbelly offers plenty of healthy options – delicious food with great service. And it caters to carnivores as well as herbivores. Everything is fresh, organic, non-GMO, and delicious!

Kindbelly is located off the beaten path at 316 79th Avenue North in Myrtle Beach. Entering the café’s parking lot, diners know that they’re a long ways from the golden arches of McDonalds. There’s more outside seating than inside seating. Kindbelly has never had a big advertising budget but that hasn’t been a big problem since satisfied customers have always been singing their praises. “It’s all been word-of-mouth promotion through Facebook,” said Hanna Singleton one of the Kindbelly owners. “We’ve been really happy with where that’s taken us. We see new faces every day, even on a slow day.” Like their food, Kindbelly’s advertising and growth has been organic.

Kindbelly is family-owned and operated. Hanna Singleton and Josh Shimmin are husband and wife and operate the restaurant. Hanna’s father and brother are also partners and between the family, they share 80 year’s experience in the restaurant business.  Josh and Hanna started out growing and selling their own microgreens at local farmers markets which led to the birth of the café. Kindbelly has its own organic, seasonal garden which provides produce for the menu. Pretty unique!

Open between 7:00 AM and 4:30 PM, Kindbelly’s menu offers a healthy alternative to the typical Myrtle Beach breakfast, lunch, and snack options. The restaurant’s menu includes soups, salads, bowls, omelets, acai and pitaya blends, smoothies, and more, all featuring organic, non-GMO and responsibly sourced ingredients. The full range of healthy offerings are listed at

Kindbelly is committed to doing its best to cater to vegan and vegetarian customers and offer grilled organic tofu, organic chick peas, and an organic tofu scramble (dubbed “veggs”) as protein options for their entrees. But for carnivores, the café offers salads with salmon to fish tacos with wild-caught tuna.  They have something for everyone at Kindbelly. The prices are very affordable for such high quality food.

Kindbelly serves organic kombucha on tap. Kombucha is a fermented, very slightly alcoholic, lightly effervescent, sweetened tea. The process for making kombucha is similar to how cabbage is preserved as sauerkraut or kimchi, or how milk is turned into yogurt. The drink is thought to have originated in an area of China. The drink is said to aid digestion, rids a body of toxins, and boosts energy. It’s also said to boost the immune system, prevents high blood pressure and heart disease. Kombucha contains B vitamins and also has probiotics, the “good bacteria” that are considered helpful for digestion.

Judging from Kindbelly’s online reviews, the acai bowls are a popular favorites. Acai berries are native to Central America and promote a healthy heart and skin health, aids in digestion, is an anti-inflammatory, boosts the immune system, aids in weight loss, and is a superfood and antioxidant. The My Friend Winnie Bowl is great for breakfast with the addition of bee pollen, bananas, homemade granola, almond milk, and organic peanut butter.

For lunch, Kindbelly offers a variety of wraps and salads. For a healthier appetite, add the pulled chicken to the Berry Goats Gruff salad. It comes with loads of fresh ingredients: spinach, beets, strawberries, candied walnuts, and goat cheese with a raspberry vinaigrette. The chicken is hormone, steroid, antibiotic, and cage free. It is sourced from South Carolina. The Naked Goddess salad has a kale and romaine mix with cucumbers, tomato, carrot, onion, chickpeas, and avocado with green goddess dressing. The salmon makes a wonderful addition. Diners can “make it a combo” which includes the choice of drink (sorry, no soft drinks) and a variety of sides including black bean hummus or mango salsa with pita chips. There are a variety of sides to choose from, but the drink options are limited.

If that’s not enough, the One Fish, Two Fish Tacos get rave reviews. Folks who have had fish tacos from all over this country claim that these were the absolute best. They’re made with wild-caught fresh tuna and fixed to perfection. The seasoning/sauce was spicy and excellent. Kindbelly is a little hidden café and its one-of-a-kind fish tacos are the best anywhere. Kindbelly proves that healthy fare is more than granola and salad.

Kindbelly is a refreshing find and a very welcome change from the typical Myrtle Beach and Grand Strand fried food norm. Its menu is guaranteed to delight any palate. Careful and thoughtful preparation is evident in every dish and the meals are not thrown together but presented with beauty and pride. Kindbelly is tucked away but certainly worth seeking out. Finding this little gem is certainly worth the effort.
