    The Lighting of the Menorah

    December 22 –December 30, 2019, 5:15 pm – 5:45 pm

Valor Park, The Market Common, Myrtle Beach, SC, 29577

The candles have been lit, the latkes eaten and the dreidel game played.

The Festival of Chanukah begins on Dec. 12 this year. The festival is still celebrated, 2,200 years after the event it commemorates. “It is a holiday of religious freedom and it is still relevant,” said Rabbi Avi Perets of Temple Emanu-EL in Myrtle Beach.

On Tuesday, December 22, Myrtle Beach’s Temple Shalom will host the lighting of the first Chanukah “candle” on a large electric menorah in The Market Common.

He will be joined by many Jewish residents of the Grand Strand for the singing, praying and celebrating.

This minor Jewish holiday recalls the victory of Judah Maccabee and his four brothers over the occupying armies of the Syrian-Greeks under King Antiochus Epiphanes in 165 BCE.
